In today's social media ecosystem, information dissemination is no longer just the presentation of facts—it has become a theatrical performance. Within this "social media theatre," information is packaged into stories, dramas, or narratives designed to provoke emotional reactions, quickly dominating the language of digital discourse. But how does this emotionally charged social language serve as a key tool for shaping public opinion while simultaneously blurring the line between reality and fiction?
We compare social media to a vast stage where everyone plays a “role” in an ongoing performance, seeking attention through eccentric, exaggerated, or even absurd behavior. These actions establish an unspoken set of collective performance rules, compelling individuals to conform to the expectations of their “audience.” Through this “social media theatre,” users are not only encouraged to perform but are also gradually conditioned, becoming part of the structured digital order.
We created a social media theater that combines digital video with a vintage theater installation, dramatising how social media compels indivisuals to exaggerate their personas for attention, provoking critical reflectiong on digital identity distortion and performative culture online.
